What is Biodynamic?

What is Biodynamic® Farming?

The model of sustainability in agriculture.

What does it all mean?

Biodynamic farming is a perfect fit for Oregon’s Wild Harvest. It mirrors our philosophical approach of doing business - take care of the earth and she will take care of us.  It’s even more focused on soil fertility than organic, which is why we love it so much. As simple as it sounds, biodynamic farming is more labor intensive than organic farming. It takes a more hands-on approach to growing and harvesting. But we think it’s worth it. Biodynamic is the original organic. Heck, it’s beyond organic. And, in our humble opinion, it’s a beautiful thing.

In organic farming, you address the biological factors that influence a farm, such as:

  1. Building the soil using cover crops and naturally occurring materials mined from the earth in their natural form.
  2. Using only organic seeds.
  3. Being FREE of Genetically Modified Organisims (GMOs).
  4. Farming without the use of chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, etc.

Biodynamic farming takes it a step further by paying close attention to the dynamic spiritual and metaphysical influences on the farm. This is where the parallels run much deeper.

In natural health care you help someone achieve better health by looking at their biological influences. Then you take it a step further and dig into the spiritual and metaphysical influences. You ask why is this person really not feeling well. Treat the symptoms and the disease. But we all know the problem runs deeper than that.

When you view the farm as a living entity and a reflection of the farmer, you begin to understand that both are interconnected. You have to be healthy to have a healthy farm. The farm has to be healthy to grow healthy plants. These plants are grown to nourish our bodies in profound ways. These plants are also used to make natural health care products, helping you achieve better health. It's so simple, yet so complicated.

Totally cosmic.

It might seem crazy in today’s precision-guided, technologically advanced world to embrace a modest, self-sustaining, labor-intensive form of farming developed in the early part of the 20th century by a philosopher/scientist named Rudolf Steiner . But that’s exactly the path we’ve been on since 2009. And what a great ride it’s been so far. Our yields are bigger. And the soil is incredibly rich and fertile.

As a Demeter® Certified Biodynamic® grower we come from a place where everything is inter-connected. Plants, animals and human beings work together to restore and harmonize the vital life forces of the farm. Think of it as sustainability on steroids. It is above and beyond organic in every possible way. All organic material generated from the farm including you guessed it – even cow poop – is recycled and returned to the soil.

A totally amazing way to farm.

The biodynamic model depends on the cycles of the moon for planting and harvesting and the use of homeopathic preps using cow horns, pulverized quartz, specific plants and more. These preps nurture the soil and protect the crops from nasty things like disease and frost. Yes, it sounds wacky, but it works! Our yields are amazing and the potency and flavor is alive and delicious.

"To truly know the world, look deeply within your own being; to truly know yourself, take real interest in the world," - Rudolf Steiner.

Back in the 1920’s, Rudolph Steiner devised an alternative to the popularity around using synthetic fertilizer and pesticides in Europe. It was called biodynamic farming. He was way ahead of his time. And now it’s back and gaining popularity and momentum.

Farmers around the world are embracing this increasingly relevant form of farming. Which is just another fine example of how interconnected we all are on this amazing planet. You have our permission to howl at the moon. We do it all the time.

Homeopathic Preps: Mother Nature’s biodynamic fertilizers and pesticides.

Biodynamic Preps (BD) are the primary form of fertilization and disease control. They help moderate and regulate the biological processes in the soil and enhance the life forces of the farm as a whole living entity. Cow horns, quartz powder and chamomile flowers among other things are used to create concoctions that are buried in the ground for a specific amount of time or strategically placed around the farm to respond to a specific need or issue like soil fertility, frost, fungus, etc.  We use seven different ones in very precise quantities.

"After more than 20 years growing and procuring the finest organic herbs, we know that the key is protecting the soil, healing the soil and saving seeds. The very best way to do that is by following the biodynamic method of farming." - Randy Buresh, Co-Founder

How can we heal the earth?

To begin to understand biodynamic farming, you must first understand yourself. This is often easier said than done. We have lost our connection with the earth. We have lost our connection with the plants that nourish us. Biodynamic farming brings us a step closer to understanding how closely connected we are with the earth on all levels.

We need to reconnect.

So how does this pertain to our farm, our company and our philosophical approach to growing herbs? We believe in biodynamic. This is a direct reflection of our philosophical approach of doing business by protecting, healing and reconnecting with the earth. We are committed to helping heal the people of the earth by providing the freshest medicinal herbs, grown in the healthiest soil with the purest water. It's all inter-connected.

So simple. So complicated. So wonderful. A perfect fit.

When using biodynamic preps, it's like practicing herbal medicine on the land. And it works. It's the ultimate form of farming and the ultimate way of living. Biodynamic farming helps create an awareness of all the beauty that surrounds us. A gentle breeze, the warmth of the sun, the beautiful stars and that big ol' beautiful moon are all here for our enjoyment. Stop and listen to the world around you. It wants us all to be a part of true sustainability, helping to protect the plants, the people, the earth and our future.

Peace, Randy
