Sustainability

Oregon's Wild Harvest has been committed to the principles of organic farming and sustainability since we planted our first herb in the early 90s. Back then, green was just a color. Now, in keeping with the standards of excellence, and believing that when we know better, we do better, our organic farm is Demeter® Certified Biodynamic.

Biodynamic® =

Most Sustainable Farming Method

All organic material generated on the farm is recycled and returned to the soil-providing nutrition for growing healthy crops

Smallest Carbon Footprint

The whole farm is considered a self-nourishing ecosystem, so it drastically reduces the need to transport, mine and refine the earth's natural resources

Original Form of Organic Agriculture

Considered the highest grade of organic farming because it has remained true to its guiding principle: the farm should be treated as a living organism with interrelated parts that encompass everything from the soil to the solar system

Unmatched Standards for Biodiversity

At least 10% of the farm must be left as a natural habitat to encourage a balanced predator/prey relationship and humus development for building insect and disease resistance.

Biodynamic farming is just one of the many ways we try to heal the earth. Here are some others:
  • We use renewable energy wherever we can. Our manufacturing plant uses Clean Wind Green Tag energy, and provides 90,302 pounds of CO2 offset. This equates to approximately 100,313 automobile miles NOT driven or 5,406 trees planted annually. It is so important to protect our environment, so we continually seek additional ways to conserve energy usage.
  • We recycle all plastic, glass, cardboard, and paper that comes into our facility.
  • We use the most recyclable, lowest weight containers available, including #1 plastic bottles for most of our encapsulated herbs, and glass bottles for the others.
  • We print our brochures, business cards and other marketing materials on 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper.
  • We support local businesses whenever possible, including our printing company, Print Green, in Eugene, Oregon.
  • We buy organic ingredients whenever possible, choosing the best possible sources who employ the same standards of excellence that we use on our own farm.
  • TLC (Thin layer chromatography) produces less waste than other means of testing herbs.
  • Seed saving. From our farming practices to the botanist's careful cataloging of every herb, we strive to ensure that the land and the herbs are readily available to future generations.
  • We believe there is always room for improvement, always a way to become greener and more sustainable. We won't stop seeking ways in which we can reduce our carbon footprint, believing it is our responsibility to tread as lightly as possible on our planet.
  • We offer employees in certain positions the option of working from home, which helps to reduce gasoline used, carbon emitted, and take-out lunch containers tossed on a daily basis.
