Background and Use

Thyme leaf is a popular culinary spice that has also been used cosmetically and medicinally. Ancient Sumerian and Egyptian cultures used Thyme for medicinal purposes and to embalm the dead. The Romans soldiers bathed in Thyme, as this was believed to provide vigor. Thyme's common name may be derived from a Greek word meaning to fumigate, based on its use as incense. In more recent history, the German Commission E has approved Thyme for symptoms of bronchitis, whooping cough, and catarrh (inflammation of upper respiratory tract mucous membranes).

In cooking, Thyme is a strongly-flavored herb that retains its flavor on drying better than many other herbs.   Use sparingly as the flavor can overpower a dish. Great with meaty dishes and is especially good as an ingredient in stews and stocks. It may also be used as an ingredient in marinades for meats, tofu and vegetarian substitutes and some vegetables.  It is slow to release its flavors so it is usually added early in the cooking process.

Precautions

Concerns for this herb are based upon therapeutic use and may not be relevant to its consumption as a culinary  seasoning.  Not recommended for use while pregnant or nursing, until further research verifies no contraindications.
