Background and Use

This formula is based upon a 19th Century traditional herbal formula developed by the Eclectics that was known as "Neutralizing Cordial." Oregon's Wild Harvest has taken this original formula and combined it with herbs that have a more recent history to bring you the best of both worlds.

Marshmallow has been used in traditional European medicine for more than 2,000 years, and its therapeutic use dates back to the 9th Century. It was widely used in Greek medicine and later its use spread to Arabian medicine. The Emperor Charlemagne ordered marshmallow cultivation in monasteries.

It's genus name, "althaea," comes from the Greek word "altho" which means "to cure."

Marshmallow root and extract were formerly official entries in the United States Pharmacopeia and the National Formulary. In Germany, marshmallow is used in a standard medicinal tea. The Commission E reports the use of marshmallow for irritation of oral mucous membranes, mild inflammation of the stomach and for dry cough.

German Chamomile has been used as a traditional medicine and tea for thousands of years, and is widely used in Europe. In the United States, chamomile was first cultivated by German settlers and had been included in the United States Pharmacopoeia and the National Formulary. Today, it is included in approximately 26 national pharmacopeias, including those of Austria, Egypt, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Russia.

Rhubarb has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years where it used as an ulcer remedy, and it is considered a bitter, cold, dry herb used to "clear heat" from the liver, stomach and blood. In Europe it is also a component of spring tonics or blood cleansing cures (e.g., Swedish bitters) as it promotes normal digestive processes.

Cinnamon has been very valuable historically due to its numerous properties and uses. It has played key roles in nutrition, medicine and even in religion, causing it to be the most sought-after spice during the peak of the spice trading era. Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) was the only country that cultivated true Cinnamon at the time. Since Cinnamon was the most desired spice, Sri Lanka was fought over and conquered by many European nations during the 17th Century spice trade era. True cinnamon is classified by the British Pharmacopeia as a 'bitter', and may be useful in the support of normal digestion.
