The first recorded use of Hypericum for medicinal purposes dates back to ancient Greece, The word Hypericum is derived from the words hyper and eikon, which translate to "over" and "icon" respectively, a reference to protection from evil demonic spirits. The benefits of St. John's Wort have been known for centuries in Europe where it is still commonly prescribed. It is only recently that it has become popular in the United States. It is estimated to be the second most commonly sold supplement here.
