Background and Use

The ancient Egyptians regarded the Olive leaf as a symbol of heavenly power and were the first to put the Olive leaf to practical use in the mummification of their kings. It continued to be used throughout history for many folk remedies. By the late 1960's, scientific research at a major American pharmaceutical company, conducted experiments with viruses using one of the constituents of this leaf. Since then, the majority of the research has taken place in Europe and it warrants further research. Olive leaf contains numerous antioxidant flavonoids, but the main focus of research has been on the oleuropein compounds.

The use of Astragalus dates back to the 5th century where it was described as a "superior" herb due to its tonic action. According to this text this supreme group of herbs were described as ‘rulers ... they control the maintenance of life and correspond to heaven'. Of this group of tonic herbs, Astragalus has earned the highest regard and is known as the "yellow leader". Currently, Astragalus is listed in the traditional medicine guides (pharmocopoeia) of China and Japan.

The early 20th century American physicians (Eclectics) prized Red Clover as an excellent alterative. Alteratives, known in folk medicine as "blood cleansers," were seen as herbs that assisted organs in the removal of metabolic waste and toxins from the circulatory system. More recent studies indicate that Red Clover has phytoestrogenic properties, and it is currently being investigated for menopausal symptom relief. Holistic practitioners believe that phytoestrogens in plants help to normalize estrogen levels by their weak estrogen-mimicking ability. This activity is under investigation.
