Devil's club is a member of the ginseng family (Araliaceae), and is similarly used as a general tonic. It has a long history of use by the indigenous people of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. Presently, Native Americans in British Columbia and the northwestern United States consider Devil's Club an important medical and spiritual plant. It is so highly revered that it is incorporated in many cultural practices and beliefs such as personal purification and in the cleansing of a house after a death in the family. At the time of writing there are no human clinical trials to support the traditional uses but several animal studies and a case study show it may support the traditional use for modulating blood sugar levels that are within a normal range. Further research is needed before it can be recommended clinically for this use.
Do not use if pregnant. Not recommended during nursing, until further research verifies no contraindications. Keep out of reach of children. Discontinue use if unusual symptoms occur. Do not exceed recommended dose unless under the guidance of a health care professional. Use cautiously in patients taking prescribed medications for diabetes.
