The most notable documented case of topical use of Garlic is from during World War where garlic poultices were traditionally used to prevent wound infections in much the same way as described thousands of years earlier in the Talmud.
St. John's Wort oil was a widely used traditional preparation herbal medicine for bruises, injuries and burns, which is based on its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. This preparation was previously used by surgeons to clean wounds, and was official in the first London Pharmacopeia as Oleum Hyperici.
There is a lot of folk history surrounding Mullein in both Europe and the United States. There are some clinical studies using Mullein in combination with other herbs as an ear drop to treat local ear infection. It is not clear what effect that Mullein alone has on the ear as the product studied was a combination of different herbal products. More high quality scientific information is needed before any conclusions can be made about the treatment of ear infections with Mullein as a single product. However, the study suggests that in cases of ear pain caused by acute ear infection in children in which active treatment is needed, an herbal extract solution may be beneficial.
