Background and Use

Ginseng was given the botanical name Panax, a word derived from the Greek word "Panacea" meaning "cure all," which demonstrates the importance of Ginseng in traditional medicine. Native to North America, Panax quinquefolius is now exported to Asia, where it has a different use from the native Asian Ginseng. It is valued in Asia for its yin properties, and is said to have a cooling effect. This cooling action is less stimulatory and more relaxing in comparison to Asian Ginseng, and is the reason why this gentler variety is often given to older people and children. Unaltered whole Ginseng root contains many constituents including recently discovered polysaccharides. The study showed that whole full spectrum products have superior activity on the immune system when compared to products standardized to ginsenosides.
