Background and Use
Psyllium is mainly used as a dietary fiber, which is not absorbed by the small intestine. The purely mechanical action of Psyllium mucilage absorbs excess water while stimulating normal bowel elimination. Recently, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) acknowledged Psyllium´s role in lowering blood cholesterol levels by allowing health claims to be made for products containing Psyllium fiber. However, since there are many other factors that can alter cholesterol levels, Psyllium products making this claim must state that Psyllium be used with a low fat diet that is also low in saturated fat and cholesterol.
