Background and Use
Historically, Black Pepper was a luxury commodity and was once used as a currency it was so valuable. Currently, Black Pepper is so common that it is used in the cuisine of almost every nation. Ancient herbalists used pepper as a stimulant. Ayurvedic medicines are combined with tiny amounts of Black Pepper to make the other herbs in the formula more available to the body. Recently the isolated constituent, piperine has been studied for the following properties; antioxidant, pain relief agent (even stronger than capsaicin), food preservation (antibacterial). It has been suggested it may play a role in the prevention of atherosclerotic plaques, and has antiproliferative properties in cancel cell lines. Note, these results are preliminary and further research is warranted before this can be recommended as a medicinal product.
