Holy Basil has been extensively used for its medicinal values by a number of cultures. In India, Holy Basil is referred to as Tulsi (meaning "incomparable one"). This sacred plant, is widely used in religious ceremonies and is believed to protect any home where it is grown. According to the traditional Ayurvedic medicine, Tulsi is one of the best herbs to prepare the heart and mind for spiritual practices, resolve colds and flu, treat snake bites and many skin conditions, and reduce fever.
Modern research shows that Holy Basil contains powerful antioxidants and it may help protect the liver. Basic clinical studies using Holy Basil suggest an effect on blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetics. However, these are very preliminary results and further research is warranted.
African Basil is the commercial name for Vana Tulsi (Ocimum gratissiumum). It is grown extensively in tropical Africa and Asia. This species is closely related to Holy Basil and shares many of its properties. A comparitive study from 2006 showed that of the genus Ocimum, African Basil had the highest level of essential oil.
