Turmeric: Traditional Ghee Preparation

The traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) method of preparing this spice is to dissolve it in Ghee. This method makes the turmeric more bioavailable to the body. It can be used topically or consumed as a spice, or even in a drink.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 teaspoon organic turmeric powder
  • 2 teaspoons Ghee (clarified butter) (This can be purchased in specialty Indian groceries)

Preparation

Melt Ghee in a frying pan until it becomes clear (cloudiness is gone).

Add turmeric powder to Ghee and mix well.

Remove immediately and let simmer off the heat for 5 minutes or until it turns a slightly darker color and releases its aroma.

Uses

  • Apply it to the mucus lining of nose to stop the sniffles.
  • It also stops nosebleeds, helps to clear the sinuses and restore sense of smell.
  • Take internally for cough and lung support.
  • Mix 1 teaspoon of the ghee mixture in sweetened warm milk and drink before bed.
  • Add to rice, dahl and any dish you feel like!

NOTE: Similar to butter, ghee contains a lot of saturated fats and should be used in moderation. The ghee alone is regarded as a medicine in the Ayurvedic tradition, where it is said to strengthen the body, the eyes and the mental functions, improve memory and promote longevity. With meals, ghee strengthens the digestive process.

NOTE:  Ghee may be made at home, or purchased when Indian Food ingredients are sold.
