Nasal Cleansing

The wonders of the emerging spring may sometimes play havoc with our bodies, and especially our sinuses if we are prone to allergies (rhinitis), or sinusitis. The key to maintenance of healthy sinuses is to maintain the health of the mucus membranes, which will keep inflammation in check. This is essential since inflammation can disrupt normal function and may leave the tissues vulnerable to infection. Therefore, it is important to keep the nasal passages open and lubricated to reduce any chance of bacterial multiplication. Aside from good nasal hygiene, it is important to drink plenty of water to keep the mucus thin, and keep the tissues lubricated. This can be done using a saline spray or a neti pot.

A very effective and pleasant method of opening and lubricating the nasal passages is to do a steam inhalation. There are many herbs that can be added to augment this process. Here are some suggestions of herbs that you may use alone, or in combination. Since some have different activities, choose at least one from each category:

AntibacterialAnti-inflammatoryMucilaginous (Loosens mucus and expels it out of the body)

Instructions

  1. Put 1-2 teaspoons of the selected dried herbs into a pan. Fill the pan halfway with water.
  2. Cover the pan and bring the water to a boil, lowering the heat to allow it to simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Put a towel over your head as you remove the lid and lean over the pot, forming a tent with the towel to keep the steam from escaping.
  4. Inhale the steam using shallow breaths through the mouth at first, since it will be very hot. As it cools, breathe more deeply into your nose and lungs.
  5. Continue inhaling steam for several minutes, until you feel congestion breaking up.
  6. Blow your nose to get rid of loose phlegm.
