Herbal Tea for Wintertime Ailments

There is nothing like a hot steamy tea, flavored with honey and lemon to soothe the symptoms of a cold or even the flu. The steam helps to loosen the mucus and the honey reduces the pain of a sore throat.

These teas are ideal remedies for children as they are mild and soothing. My 7-year-old son has, at times, redefined the word "picky eater" but will often request herbal tea, even when he is healthy.

Below is a list of some herbs which can be blended into a cold and flu tea- both for adults and children. I was going to categorize these herbs according to function, but after referring to Dr. Duke's Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Database, I discovered that they are all capable of modulating the inflammation response! I have now grouped the herbs according to flavor. The mucilaginous soothers will be really beneficial if there is any soreness of the throat, but will be equally helpful for the upper respiratory tract even in the absence of a sore throat.

I suggest that you choose one (or more) herbs from each category, using the composition guidelines (the % next to each category). Have fun experimenting and adapting the recipe according to your individual taste and preference.
