Yet, they add a special level of caring and heart that is so rare in today's world. I have seen the OWH team go beyond the extra mile to make sure my patients get what they need and countless patients of mine have shared with me that the level of caring and compassion has helped them on their healing journey. As one patient said so perfectly: "You can feel the passion and care that goes into their herbal medicine, and each time I place an order I feel better just having called."  - Dr. Chris D. Herbal Chest Rub

Instead of using a petroleum-based product such as Vicks vapo-rub, try this simple salve recipe for a cheap and natural alternative. With the surge in skin-based medicines such as the birth-control patch, it has become increasingly obvious how much the skin actually absorbs. What we put on our bodies is just as important as what we put in our bodies!

This olive oil-based salve is 100% natural and is a perfect delivery system for the effective essential oils which have been used for hundreds of years in our fight against the common cold.

Eucalyptus oil contains a very strong vapor, eucalptol, which when inhaled will break down the mucus which is likely to create a respiratory infection.

Menthol, in Peppermint oil, helps in clearing the respiratory tract. It is an effective expectorant which removes nasal and respiratory congestion immediately.

The salve allows us to apply a thin layer of the potent essential oil, while promoting absorption of the eucalptol and menthol. The recipe can be made using essential oils. However, for those who prefer to save some money and do it the old-fashioned way, you can make your own herb-infused oil from our amazingly fresh Peppermint leaf.**

  • 1 cup of Olive Oil or herb-infused oil (such as Rosemary or Peppermint)**
  • ½ teaspoon Peppermint essential oil
  • ½ teaspoon Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 1 fluid ounce of melted beeswax

  1. You can melt the beeswax in a double boiler or add the grated beeswax to heated herbal oil.
  2. Add the essential oils and stir thoroughly.
  3. Pour the salve into containers before the blend starts to harden.
  4. If your salve is too runny, simply re-heat and add more beeswax.
  5. If it is too hard, re-heat and use more oil.
  6. If pressed for time, you can test your salve by pouring about a tablespoon of the heated mixture in a container and placing it in the freezer.
  7. Wait a few minutes to check consistency and adjust recipe as desired.
  8. Generously apply this mixture to the chest region to clear the nasal passages.

** Herb-Infused Oil

To make an infused oil, low heat and long infusion time is preferable. I use a crockpot, but an electric roaster is better since they have an even lower temperature setting.

  1. Place herbs and oils in crockpot and set on the lowest possible heat.
  2. Leave for about 3 hours in a crockpot (varies according to the temperature of the crockpot).
  3. OR leave for about 2 weeks in an electric roaster at the lowest setting.
  4. Strain to remove the peppermint.
  5. Use the oil in the Chest Rub salve recipe above. If doing so, omit the Peppermint essential oil from the recipe.
