Herbal Bath Bags

These great gifts are very special and are a type of "tea bag" for the bath. The bags hang around the faucet and as the hot water pours into the batch, it releases the essential oils from the contents, into the bath, creating a wonderful soothing bath that will make your friend feel really indulged. They are also 100% natural and can be re-used a few times.

Supplies Needed

  • Cotton muslin or pre-made re-sealable tea bags (large size)
  • Ribbon or string
  • An assortment of herbs. Cut and sifted herbs are preferable to powdered herbs. Try to mix a variety of leaves, roots and flowers since roots will be less aromatic in this preparation.
  • Essential oils (optional)
  • Sea salt, oats, epsom salts, powdered milk, citrus peel (optional)

Preparation

  1. Although the sewing is easy, if you prefer, you can purchase special large-sized tea bags that can be sealed with an iron
  2. If sewing, cut the fabric into 6-inch squares (approximately)
  3. Cut ribbon or string that is double the length of the squares (12-inches).  (This will be used to hang the bag over the faucet, so it must be fairly strong)
  4. Lay out a piece of fabric.  Lay the string/ribbon on top in a U-shape with the U formed inside the square.  (You want to sew the ribbon inside the bag, so when you turn the bag inside-out, you can hold the ribbon like a handle)
  5. Place the other piece of fabric on top and secure with a few pins.  Sew around the square, being sure to leave a small opening to pour the herbs through
  6. Turn your bag inside-out through the hole
  7. Fill the bag through the hole, using a piece of paper that you have rolled up to use as a funnel
  8. Sew the seam shut
