Our greenhouses are exploding with new life, with thousands and thousands of little sprouts. About 90% of all Oregon's Wild Harvest herbs start as sprouts in the greenhouse, as our springs are long, wet, and too cool for effective germination in the ground. So we plant early, and then move the flats outside before transplanting in the fields. The cover crops are looking good, and will eventually be turned under to provide a green manure crop. This is the soil and the part of the farm to which we transplant our many seedlings that were started in the green house.
We presently have Echinacea, purpurea, angustifolia, skullcap, feverfew, astragalus, dandelion, and ashwagandha growing. Next, we will be direct planting calendula and burdock seed, two plants that do not require greenhouse germination.
Spreading compost through the fields to be planted is a big job, but an important one. We are also adding important minerals and nutrients to the soil. Properly preparing the soil with critical nutrients is not unlike providing our bodies with the necessary nutrition to grow. Like the human body, a plant needs optimal nourishment to grow as healthy as it can be. Our goal is to provide every advantage to our herbs as they grow, beginning with the best organic soil; giving our best to the plants allows us to give the plants' best to our customers.
We are also busy taking root divisions from our organic goldenseal and hope to add another half acre this spring. A new shade house was built last fall and the ground is now prepared and ready for these new root divisions. Looking around the rest of the farm, you'll see perennial life popping through, reaching for the warm sun as it shows its face more and more regularly after a long hiatus.
We are also working at trying to germinate our goldenseal seed that was harvested last summer, a task which probably sounds much easier than it is. We don't take shortcuts on the Oregon's Wild Harvest farm, and the proof is in the plants. Superior preparation, premium soil, outstanding organic seed selection, and optimal care all work together to bring you the best nature has to offer. Our harvest is in your hands.
