It's already spring at the Oregon's Wild Harvest farm - we are busy cleaning seed and working in the greenhouses, planting seeds that were harvested in the fall of 2006. We have just started astragalus, and soon will be planting ashwagandha, artichoke, echinacea and skullcap. These are just a few of the many herbs that will be started in our greenhouses and transplanted onto the farm later this spring.
Biodynamic Farm
We are excited to announce that we have taken the next step and have applied for certification as a "Biodynamic Farm Operation". We will maintain our "Certified Organic Farm and Processing" status that we've held since 1990. Biodynamic agriculture is an advanced organic farming system. The basic principal of biodynamic farming is to conceive the farm as an organism, a self-contained entity, having its own individuality. The farm as an entity has a place within the ecosystem, the regional environment, mother earth, and ultimately the universe.
Biodynamic farming combines good biological practices, i.e., healthy soil and crop rotations with ‘dynamic' qualities, such as the metaphysical, holistic and spiritual aspects of the farm. The end result is healthier soil, crops with greater nutritional value and better flavor, and also a renewal and rejuvenation of the farm's natural resources. What better way to cultivate herbs grown for alternative medicine than on a biodynamic farm, considered ‘alternative' agriculture.
There is a distinct parallel between the biodynamic farm and herbal medicine. They are both based upon holistic principles encompassing the biological and metaphysical aspects that define a harmonious lifestyle.
